Wetwang Weear Wad a Thowt It - Stories fom a High Wolds village
Chris Whitfield is a well-known and respected farmer in and around the Yorkshire Wolds and he is an active member of the East Riding Dialect Society.
Through his humorous stories, he describes Wolds life in the 40s, 50s and 60s.
For a number of years Chris has been entertaining groups with his stories of people he has known in and around Wetwang. His amusing talks have been liberally sprinkled with Chris’ own poetry, written in East Yorkshire dialect. His use of dialect has enlivened his recollections and brought an authentic feel to his stories.
It was the conviction of many people that Chris’ stories should be recorded for posterity and this book goes some way towards this. In addition to sympathetically relating amusing anecdotes of village characters, Chris has managed to chronicle the way of life of East Riding villagers in the 40s, 50s and 60s, giving the reader an empathy with people living in the Yorkshire Wolds 60 to 80 years ago.
As well as telling stories of villagers he has known, Chris relates his own family history and recalls a life spent on the Wolds devoted to agriculture.
We would commend this book to anybody who wishes to understand life on the Wolds, post Second World War, seen through the lives of East Riding country folk and in addition, the reader is assured of a good laugh.
