This programme shows archive film of life at Manor Farm on the Sussex Downs in the 1950s. Filmed by the farmer himself, Downland Farm in the Fifties provides a unique look at an era and way of life that has now disappeared.
More than 30 men were employed at harvest time with a range of machinery including Caterpillar, Field Marshall, Grey Fergie, International Harvester and Fordsons, plus binders, reapers, a threshing set and a flax puller, all of which are seen at work. Stacks were made and thatched by hand with the aid of a boom and grab to lift the hay from the carts.
Crops featured include cereals, flax and root crops for winter feed for the Guernsey, Shorthorn and Sussex cattle.
