Filmed in b&w during the 1940s, this famous series of films shows the development of farming and rural life in four diverse areas of the country, including the Midland Shires, the Fens, Cornwall and the Downs. This dvd celebrates the virtues and toil of the rural way of life at a time when many more people than today worked on the land.
The four programmes featured include:
Grassy Shires (1944) which looks at the farmlands of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Warkwickshire.
Fenlands (1945) which provides the story of the fens and how good farmland was created over the centuries.
Cornish Valley (1944) shows how remote farms without electricity and gas make the best of the varying terrain.
Downlands (1947) examines the downlands from the chalk cliffs of Dover, Sussex and Hampshire to the Cotswolds and Mendips.
