Closed in the mid-1960s, the 'Cuckoo Line', which ran between Polegate and Eridge in East Sussex, wound its way across the picturesque Wealden landscape with its several impressive mock-Tudor stations. Memories of the Cuckoo Line - Tunbridge Wells West to Eastbourne DVD reveals a rich legacy of cine-film and still images to provide us with cherished memories of a much loved rural branch line. The film includes journeys over the Cuckoo Line behind steam in both directions, re-living the timeless events at each station along the way. Scenes are also captured over the last weekend of passenger services on scheduled trains and 'The Wealdsman', a special train run by the LCGB. The truncated DEMU shuttle between Polegate and Hailsham is seen before it was withdrawn in 1968.
A brief history explains the line's complex development and its handsome architecture. The programme also features interviews with former railway employees, providing a fascinating insight into the day to day life of the line. In conclusion, a 'then and now' sequence shows us what is left of the branch line, some 45 years after the last passenger train made its journey from Eridge to Polegate.
