Fred Klein, born in a village in Romania in 1925, was forced to leave the family farm and join the German army as soon as he turned eighteen during the Second World War. There followed two years of terrible hardship before he was able to give himself up to the Americans. He was shipped to England as a prisoner of war, and found himself working the land in Herefordshire. But this was Fred's salvation, because farming was in his blood.
His talent as a herdsman impressed Captain de Quincey, whose Hereford cattle herd was world renowned. After returning to Romania he was contacted by de Quincey with the offer of work at The Vern on a permanent basis, as the Captain's right-hand man, which he accepted.
After the years at The Vern 'lucky Fred' started an apple tree shaking business.
This is the extraordinary story of a Transyylvanian who made Herefordshire his home. A scarce copy.
