For over 45 years TVNZ's Country Calendar has brought the best of New Zealand's farming and countryside to the screen, with more than 2000 programmes made. In 2010 veteran presenter Frank Torley was asked to select his twelve favourite episodes.
This dvd is the result - three hours ranging all over the country from 1974 to the present. New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and this dvd features some wonderful filming. There are plenty of cattle, sheep and horses on view as well as items on deer, land management, wine growing and beekeeping. The episodes shown include:
Class 8 Country - restoration of over-grazed land in South Island high country.
Deer Capture - 1970s capture of wild stock for farming.
Snow Raking - sheep rescue in a severe snow storm in high country Omarama.
Sweat, Steam & the Straw-Walloper - vintage farm machinery enthusiasts re-enact an old fashioned wheat harvest with steam thrashing and horse-drawn binder.
Orange Roughy - on the research ship the Tangorea to see the extent of over fishing of orange roughy.
Blind Bee Farmer - Bryce Hooton was a dairy farmer who overcame blindness following an accident to become a beekeeper instead.
Twins - two fifteen year old twins who run a 3500 acre hill country farm.
Wild Cattle McGarrie - an exciting muster along the coastline and into the sea.
Branches Station - an autumn muster of cattle and sheep in high country.
Wild Cattle - helicopter round-up.
Wines on the Hill - a couple in Hawkes Bay who knew nothing about growing grapes but now run a successful winery.
Dunstan Downs - an artist inspired by hard-country Merino work.
This dvd also includes a catch-up on each story.
