The harvest has always been the climax of the farming year. When this programme was first made in the 1970s, men in their eighties and nineties were able to recall harvests from before the First World War.
They demonstrated the use of the scythe and the flail and showed how horses powered the machinery including an early reaper and sail-cutter. They talked about the role of the Harvest Lord, the horkey, with it's boiled beans and pork supper and how everyone in the community lent a hand. Then there was the steam threshing, providing winter work.
This is a portrait of an almost forgotten age, brought to life by archive film and accurate re-stagings.
