The book deals with the social aspects of hop growing and hop picking, how it affected not only the local farmers, their wives, families, and farmworkers, but hop pickers who came from the Black Country and the South of Wales in vast numbers.

Detailed information is also provided in the second half of the book concerning how the farmers grew the hops in order to secure a good harvest.
